El suicidio en los inicios de la ciencia ficción

Resumen
Los tres relatos analizados en este artículo, The Sandman (1817) de Hoffmann, The Mortal Immortal (1834) de Mary Shelley y Rappaccini’s Daughter (1844) de Hawthorne, han sido tradicionalmente analizados desde los presupuestos de la literatura fantástica y gótica. Sin embargo, en los tres casos, sus autores realizan extrapolaciones, respetando la lógica cognitiva, a partir del conocimiento científico de sus épocas. Cumplen con ello los requisitos de la ciencia ficción y pueden ser, por tanto, analizados teniendo en cuenta el protocolo de lectura propio de este género. Tal perspectiva permite considerar sus inverosimilitudes como textualmente reales e incorporarlas al análisis de los proyectos de suicidio de sus protagonistas. En los tres casos se aprecia el síndrome de Frankenstein, propio de los inicios de la ciencia ficción, según el cual toda trasgresión científica de las leyes de la naturaleza conduce a la destrucción.
