Resumen

La emergente utopía de lograr una ciudadanía planetaria, cuyas repercusiones educativas resultan de primer orden, ofrece a la Educación Ambiental un reto y una oportunidad renovadora. La aspiración nos remite al concepto de planetariedad, acuñado a raíz de la alerta de científicos y pensadores sobre los estrechos lazos entre el ser humano y el planeta en su realidad total, no solo física o biosférica sino también histórica y social. Por ello, con frecuencia se ha denominado Era planetaria a la actual etapa histórica, en la cual la interdependencia se revela como un rasgo especialmente significativo que reclama la asociación planetaria de los humanos para afrontar el destino común. En el artículo se proponen algunas pautas para que la Educación Ambiental pueda dar respuesta al desafío y contribuir a la construcción de una sociedad cada vez más compleja y globalizada pero, también, crecientemente sostenible; que camine por senderos de comprensión recíproca y tolerancia, y, a la vez, consciente de la propia e ineludible ecodependencia, se comprometa con el valor intrínseco de lo vivo y la preservación de la vida en todas sus manifestaciones.

Environmental education and planetary citizenship

The emerging Utopia of attaining planetary citizenship, whose educational repercussions are of the first order, offers a challenge and a renovative opportunity for environmental education. The aspiration alludes to the concept of “planetariness”, which was coined as a result of the alert sounded by scientists and thinkers about the close ties between the human being and Planet Earth in its full reality, meaning not just the planet’s physical or biospheric reality but also its historical and social reality. Accordingly, the current stage of history, where interdependence is revealed as an especially significant trait that calls for the planetary association of humans in order to face the common fate of all, has frequently been dubbed “the planetary Era”. This article proposes a number of guidelines to enable environmental education to provide an answer to the challenge and help build an increasingly complex, globalised, yet also growingly sustainable society, a society that walks paths of reciprocal understanding and tolerance and, at the same time, in awareness of its own unavoidable ecodependence, commits to the intrinsic value of that which is alive and the preservation of life in all its embodiments.
