Resumen

William Hogarth fue, a través de su serie de seis estampas A Harlot's Progress (La carrera de una prostituta), el artista que mejor supo plasmar la imagen de la prostituta y su mundo en el arte europeo del siglo XVIII. El articulo examina las principales interpretaciones de la serie, explora hasta que punto reproduce la realidad social de la prostitución, o más bien los prejuicios existentes sobre el asunto y filialmente indaga su influencia sobre el arte español y en concreto sobre la figura de Francisco de Goya, cuyas representaciones de prostitutas en Los Caprichos ofrecen una estimulante posibilidad de comparación.
