NEWS ON THE STUDY OF THE CERRO DE LOS MOROS BRONZE AGE HILLFORT (CASTILLEJO DE INIESTA, CUENCA)

This paper presents the compendium of results obtained from the archaeological campaigns carried out in 2023 and 2024 at the Cerro de los Moros Archaeological Site, a Bronze Age fort located in Castillejo de Iniesta (Cuenca). Basically, the wall and the upper terracing platform have been excavated, in which two levels or occupation phases have been documented at least, the first one dating between 2000-1800 BC, with evidence of an episode of fire and destruction, and in both great fertility in materials of all types and quality. The interest of research in this hillfort is highlighted for the comprehensive study of the origin and evolution of the “Castrification” process throughout the Bronze Age and in this part of the La Mancha area.

In this paper, we propose a theoretical reflection and assessment of the concepts of “technique” and “technology” in archaeology. First, we analyze the historical evolution of these concepts and, specifically, within the different schools and currents of archaeology since the 19th century. Subsequently, we offer some reflections from historical and dialectical materialism to analyze the concepts of technique and technology in archaeology. Finally, we conclude with a critical analysis of how archaeology, both in itself and in its relationship with technique and technology, fits into the capitalism of today’s society.

LEARNING THE ROLE OF FIRE IN HOMININ COGNITIVE EVOLUTION

Fire played an essential role throughout our evolution, and it is still crucial in day today life. This study focuses on the importance of fire beyond classic but yet fundamental research on cooking, thermoregulation and human morphology. The aim of this essay is to contribute to the understanding on the role of fire which influenced early hominins’ behaviour and cognition. To do so, multidisciplinary evidences were integrated into two recent cognitive models such as Material Engagement Theory (MET) and Causal Cognition. This study is based on theoretical research which demonstrates the inherent relationship between cognition and behaviour, the significance of fire throughout thousands of years and how hominins learnt to take advantage of it.

THE “TECTIFORMS” OF EL CASTILLO, LA PASIEGA AND ALTAMIRA: REPRESENTATION AND ORGANIZATION OF THE TERRITORY DURING THE UPPER PALAEOLITHIC

This paper suggests that the enigmatic, multiple and complex so-called “tectiform” compositions in the caves of El Castillo, La Pasiega, and Altamira - in northern Spain– represent faithfully the territory surrounding each of the caves. While the tectiforms represent mountains in all cases, rivers are expressed by rows of dots or natural cracks on the wall, depending on the cave. The three drawings complement one another and together they represent the Cantabria territory of the basins of rivers Besaya, Saja and Pas, where these caves sites. This paper upgrades the previous paper (Moreno Garcia-Mansilla 2024) presented in Rock Art Research, which covered 6 other maps or “Croquis” in the the caves of Estrellas, Palomas, La Pileta and Altamira, confirming and reinforcing the hypothesis that palaeolithic signs can be deciphered and that palaeolithic men had abstract, communication and territorial organization capabilities, ideas which, until today, were only suspected.

THE MEGALITHIC NECROPOLIS OF FONELAS IN CONTEXT

This paper presents a state of the art on the megalithic necropolis of Fonelas, reviewing the interventions that have been carried out to date and their contributions to the knowledge we currently have about this area. On the other hand, a review is made of the significance of this dolmenic grouping within the larger context of the megalithic phenomenon of the southeast.

ESSAY ON THE INTERPRETATION OF THE FUNERARY RITUAL OF THE EARLY BRONZE AGE BASED ON THE RESULTS FROM THE NECROPOLIS OF LOS TORCALES 1 AND 6, BEAS (HUELVA)

During the earthworks control operations for the execution of the N-435 bypass, Trigueros- Beas (from May to July 2015), the remains of five cist funerary structures were discovered in the archaeological sites known as “Los Torcales 1 and 6”, very close to the area where Mariano Del Amo discovered and published the Beas cist in 1975, one of the few examples where preserved human bones were documented. The five cists were found intact and contained grave goods compatible with other assemblages from both the Guadalquivir area and the sierra de Huelva, dating to the first half of the second millennium BC. Based on the two anthropological analyses conducted, radiocarbon dating, and the similarities with other assemblages such as the necropolis of Cortijo de Chichina (Sanlúcar la Mayor, Seville), La Orden- Seminario (Huelva), and the SE-B and SE-K necropolises from the operations at Cobre Las Cruces, Salteras (Seville), among others, it will be presented an interpretative proposal of the funerary ritual and its sequencing following the individual’s death and burial.

LIVESTOCK BONE MARKS FROM THE ROMAN PURPLE WORKSHOP AT LOBOS 1 (LOBOS ISLAND, FUERTEVENTURA, CANARY ISLANDS)

Archaeological excavations at the Roman purple workshop on the islet of Lobos have provided a great record of faunal remains, both marine and terrestrial. This contribution focuses on the domestic terrestrial fauna, with a high abundance of Caprinae, Capra hircus and Ovis aries, and a lower representation of Sus domesticus and Felis catus. The composition of this record is assessed, quantifying its presence and representativeness in accordance with archaeozoological methodology. It focuses on the study of the observed bone marks, classifying them according to their origin, biological and anthropic, as well as their morphology. Variable types are identified in the different skeletal parts of each of the taxonomic groups. Finally, there is a discussion of the butchery patterns that can be identified in the record. In short, an exhaustive and contextual study of the meaning of this record is carried out, facilitating the understanding of the procurement strategies of the Murileguli. These strategies would involve supplying the workshop’s original place (Gades) and relations with the local Canary inhabitants, a food supply (meat, milk, marrow and fats) and raw materials for a variety of manufactured goods (skins, bones and antlers).

PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF THE UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY IN THE SEGAÑO (FERROL ESTUARY, GALICIA)

Next to the estuary of Segaño (Ría de El Ferrol) there is series of highly detailed naval artillery pieces, which makes their identification and dating difficult. Both the visual archaeological survey carried out and the data entered the Geographic Information System (GIS) allow us to generate hypotheses about the reason for the existence of these cannons in that location. Due to their specific characteristics and dimensions, they could have been cast between the years 1650 and 1728 and their foundry would have been Spanish. The reality is that, with current data, it cannot be determined whether the material found is part of the remains of a shipwreck or if the artillery was thrown into the sea as a desperate measure to deballast the vessel.
