Nueva algarabía

Resumen

En el año 1999 el prestigioso periódico egipcio Al Ahram (Las Pirámides) publicaba, entre sus páginas de cultura, una suerte de canon literario árabe, un artefacto del tipo al que nos tiene acostumbrados a los regañadientes Harold Bloom. En una lectura detallada de aquella lista, me llamó poderosamente la atención el escaso número de obras que estaban traducidas al español y, por lo tanto, a disposición del público de nuestro país. Recordemos que Naguib Mahfouz recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1988. En él se recogían las cincuenta mejores novelas escritas en dicha lengua durante el por entonces próximo a extinguirse siglo XX.

New hubbub

Abstract: In 1999, the prestigious Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram (The Pyramids) published, among its culture pages, a sort of Arabic literary canon, an artifact of the type that Harold Bloom reluctantly has us accustomed to. In a detailed reading of that list, I was struck by the small number of works that were translated into Spanish and, therefore, available to the public in our country. Let us remember that Naguib Mahfouz received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988. It included the fifty best novels written in that language during the then near extinct 20th century.
