Abstract

Complexity is part of a list of frequently used concepts that, once analyzed in greater detail, seem to vanish. This analysis should take into account its connection with currents such as Systems Theory, Evolutionism and Functionalism, from where the universalist aspirations of positions that contradictorily advocate segmentable realities are unveiled. The main derived problems to be identified will be those related to teleology, function and directionality, the measurement of complexity and clas- sifications, the consideration of levels in systems and how all this converges in specific understandings of society. As a result, an alternative understanding of society and complexity is proposed, the core of which is fundamentally rooted in its non-existence except as a model and category and in its manifesta- tion through diversity.
