Abstract

Deforestation during the Roman Imperial period was a phenomenon of significant environmental impact. This process greatly transformed the Roman rural landscape, whose effects endured after the fall of the Pars Occidentalis. The arrival of the Visighotic people to the Iberian Peninsula brought about the creation of new legislative corpora, among which the Liber Iudiciorum or Lex Visighotorum, promulgated in 654 AD, stands out. This study analyzes the degrees of convergence and divergence in forestry-related matters between both cultures, whit the aim of assessing the extent of Roman assimilation within the Visighotic Kingdom of Toledo. The selected documentary sources are largely legislative and etymological. The former were chosen for having been issued by the State and thus possessing an oficial carácter, while the latter were included for providing an interesting gramatical perspective that helps trace and define the projection of contemporary terminology back into the past in the field of forestry.
