Abstract
" Zīna e iṣlāḥ. Reflections to understand young Abū Marwān b. Zuhr's (d. 1161/2) aesthetic medicine". The bibliography on the Andalusian doctor Abū Marwān b. Zuhr (ca. 1090 1161/2) is still full of erroneous opinions, especially in regard to a "Kitāb al-zīna" he is supposed to have written and to the true intention of his Kitāb al-iqtiṣād. In this paper we try to show that this latter is to a great extent a treatise on aesthetic medicine, where the author explains not only all kinds of cosmetics but also the way of improving the external appearance of his patients, trying to repair their imperfections, even surgically if necessary. The fact that he calls this method tariq al-zina is significant and helps us to answer some basic questions about the writings of Avenzoar.
