About the Journal

Focus and scope
All works published in Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo are original and unpublished, and must not have been accepted for publication by any other journal. Articles on literature, art, history and philosophy from the period 1700-1850 in Spain, America and Europe can be found in this journal. To this end, it accepts original works of a general theoretical, critical, historical, erudite or documentary nature in any of the official languages of Spain, as well as in English, French, Italian and Portuguese. Scientific articles are submitted for review through a double-blind peer review system. Once they have successfully completed the evaluation process, they will be published in their original language.

Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo allows free access to all its contents.

Review process

Authors should submit their papers making sure that they comply with the submission guidelines for authors. The editorial board will check that it meets the minimum requirements in terms of format, thematic fit and originality of the work; afterwards, the manuscript will be assigned to one member of the editorial board, or, if applicable, to the editor of the monograph or dossier, who will be in charge of the review process and, if accepted, of the subsequent steps until its publication. Originals received and assigned to a responsible editor will be scrutinised by two peer reviewers experts on the subject matter of the article, who will evaluate the manuscript following the double-blind model. The reviewers will upload their reports and recommendations to the journal´s online interface; once this is done, the editor in charge will communicate the recommendations of the reviewers to the manuscript author and will consider any major changes advised by the reviewers and take appropriate action, including the request of a resubmission of the manuscript for a further review if deemed advisable. The editor  would send on of the following decisión to the authors:

 

  • Accepted for publication
  • Accepted with minor revisions
  • Revise and resubmit for review
  • Send to another journal
  • Rejected

 

*In case of one favorable evaluation and one unfavorable evaluation, the opinion of a third specialist would be required.

 

Open Access Policy

Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo allows free and open access to its contents, with the aim to help the diffusion of research results and greater global exchange of knowledge.

 

Anti-plagiarism policy

Manuscripts submitted to Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo must be original and unpublished papers and not under review in other journals.The TURNITIN software will be used to detect possible plagiarism and/or self plagiarism.

A similarity index of up to 20%  is deemed acceptable —25% when the similarity is established against previous works by the author of the manuscript—, excluding bibliography and cited primary and secondary sources, as well as appendices and other coincidences that might raise the similarity index for reasons other than plagiarism.

In the case of studies that involve an update and extension of previous research, this circumstance must be pointed out and the editor in charge of the evaluation process will be responsible for determining whether the publication is reiterative with respect to previous works. This in no way excludes the evaluation by double blind peers of the texts in those sections that require it.

 

Frequency of publication

Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo publishes one issue per year, in the last semester of the year. The Journal is an annual publication.

This section includes papers that, due to their smaller size or to deal with specific aspects, may not be considered as articles, but which represent advances in some research of high documentary or informative value, or which have an essayistic and interpretative value, in the opinion of the editorial board. The journal's team will redirect to this section and will directly review the submissions that meet these characteristics. No peer review will be conducted. The thematic and chronological scope will be the same as for the miscellaneous section.

Reviews

Submissions are open to any interested author or at the proposal of the editorial board.

Reviews of new literature (preferably published in the three years preceding the current issue) on any of the thematic and chronological areas of the journal will be published. Several books may be reviewed together. A minimum length of two pages and a maximum of five is recommended, although final approval is at the sole discretion of the journal's editorial team.

Anejos de
Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo

The Anejos de Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo are a parallel collection of the journal, which publishes with irregular frequency monographs, documentary series or editions of historical or philological value, which due to their size or characteristics exceed the framework of the other sections. Proposals for publication will be addressed directly to the editors and will be subject to blind peer review. Manuscripts submitted to this section should not exceed 100,000 words, unless the editors of the journal consider that a longer length is justified. The originals must be delivered strictly with the format and presentation rules of the journal and the editing and layout process will be responsibility of the authors. The theme and chronology of the Anejos will be the same as those of the Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo. They will be published digitally separately from the ordinary issues of the journal, with their own numbering and year, but the same ISSN. The works submitted must be original and unpublished in any format, making the corresponding cession of rights at the time of acceptance.

Archiving and content preservation

Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo has an archiving system via OJS (Open Journal System) that guarantees its digital preservation. The magazine keeps the PKP PN activated (https://docs.pkp.sfu.ca/pkp-pn/en/). Past issues can be consulted in the LOCKSS editorial manifesto (https://revistas.uca.es/index.php/cir/gateway/lockss) and in CLOCKSS (https://revistas.uca.es/index.php/cir/gateway/clockss).

Likewise, the journal is stored in RODIN (Repository of Research and Learning Objects of the University of Cádiz: https://rodin.uca.es/xmlui/), Dialnet and in other databases from the date of its inclusion.

Authors have permission to host their works once they have been published on their personal, institutional or research websites as long as they indicate the source of their publications.

The originals published in this journal are property of Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo: it is necessary to cite the original source for any use of the works.

Authors retain the copyright © and assign the right of publication to the journal. They will be able to host a version of their published works in personal pages or destined to science popularization, as long as they indicate the original source of the work and the link to the content published by the journal.

Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement

Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo publishes original research of a theoretical, historical, critical, erudite or documentary nature on aspects related to art, literature, history and philosophy from the period 1700-1850. This general chronological framework may be extended in the monographs in accordance with the characteristics of the topic addressed, so that it can be developed as fully as possible and, exceptionally, when the connections of the topic with other works published by the journal make this extension of the framework advisable.

In order to guarantee the rigour of the research published, Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo adheres to the principles of transparency and good editorial practices established by the Code of Conduct for editors of scientific journals established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE: Committee on Publication Ethics).

We provide a brief summary of this code of conduct.

Editors' responsibilities

The editors of Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo are committed to:

  • Ensure the quality of the material they publish, maintaining the academic integrity of the content evaluated and guaranteeing freedom of expression.
  • To improve the quality of the journal on an ongoing basis, so that it can be a reference within its scientific field.
  • To meet the needs of readers and authors.
  • To maintain the confidentiality of the contents submitted for publication, as well as those of author and reviewer during the peer review process.
  • The editors will not use the data contained in the texts under consideration without the explicit consent of the author.
  • To avoid conflicts of interests, of a commercial or intellectual nature.
  • To publish corrections and retractions when necessary.
  • To notify subscribers to the journal of the publication of each issue.

Responsibilities of authors

Authors who submit their research to Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo must ensure that:

  • The submitted papers contain original research and are free of academic plagiarism. They should also avoid repeating information already published by other researchers, unless they represent new approaches or considerable advances in knowledge.
  • All contributing authors must be correctly identified as such in the manuscript.
  • The sources used must be clearly indicated in the text, as well as in the bibliography, in accordance with the guidelines established by the journal.
  • Authors will be responsible for the contents and opinions of their studies; if they detect any major error, they must communicate it to the editors, who will determine whether to make the correction in the text or its metadata, or whether to make use of the "Notes" section for the rectification.
  • Authors will adapt their work to the journal's publication rules and will follow the guidelines established for each of its sections.
  • Work under evaluation by any other journal or publisher will not be accepted; if this is detected, the article will be rejected.

Responsibility of reviewers

The reviewers are a key element in guaranteeing the quality of the work published in Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo and work under the following premises:

  • They will ensure the confidentiality of both the manuscripts and their own identity, avoiding the disclosure of any information on the evaluation form that may suggest their responsibility in the evaluation process.
  • They will not make use of the data contained in the texts under review prior to their publication.
  • They will perform their duties following the deadlines established for the completion of their task, informing the editor of any incident in the process that might affect their ability to submit the review on time.
  • Once the evaluation of the work has been completed, the editor may request clarification on the aspects assessed in accordance with the template established for this task.

Conflict of interest

  • Authors must indicate the sources of funding for their work.
  • Appropriate measures will be taken to resolve potential conflicts of interest between authors, reviewers and editors.

Complaints and appeals

Authors may appeal and challenge editorial decisions in a reasoned manner. The final decision on the acceptance or rejection of the manuscript will not be reversed unless an irregularity is detected or new information relevant to the editorial decision has come to light. Responsibility for images published in the journal shall remain with their authors, who must have the necessary permissions for their reproduction.

Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo supports quality research by both established and emerging researchers.

It also provides coverage for research in developing countries to establish confluence elements and networks.

 

Good editorial practices in gender and language

Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo promotes a non-discriminatory use of language, which avoids stereotypes and biases based around gender, race, class, religion, sexual identity or nationality, both in the topics studied and in the research methods. The stigmatization or idealization of any group, as well as the association of certain human groups with specific values, professions, ideologies or customs will be avoided. The Editorial Board will ensure a balanced presence of women and men at all levels of its operation. The published contributions will always include the name of their authors, in such a manner that it allows the correct identification of the corresponding author by means of an ORCID code or equivalent. Bibliographic references will include first names for the sake a clear identification.

In terms of language, we must not confuse grammatical gender (a category that applies only to words), gender as a sociocultural construct (roles, behaviours, activities and attributes that a given society and time attribute to each sex) and sex (biological differentiation in living beings). In this sense, we adhere to the United Nations goal of "expressing oneself orally and in writing without discriminating against a particular sex, social gender or gender identity and without perpetuating gender stereotypes" (https://www.un.org/es/gender-inclusive-language/index.shtml). The way to achieve this purpose must be sought without altering the necessary grammatical correctness and good style of both common speech and academic writing. In the case of articles written in Spanish, the Editorial Board refers to the report of the Real Academia Española Academy on inclusive language (https://www.rae.es/sites/default/files/Informe_lenguaje_inclusivo.pdf) and assumes the objective of "endorsing the respectful verbal treatment of men and women in our society, promoting egalitarian education that leads to the disappearance of degrading or offensive expressions directed at any person because of their sex or social condition, eliminating paternalistic attitudes towards women and strengthening labour and social conditions that put an end to historical situations of prolonged inequality". The Board also assumes, from the same report, the need to achieve this end without "violating other discursive or pragmatic postulates, such as those of equivalence, appropriateness, convenience, aesthetics and, especially, the principle of economy". By virtue of these basic criteria, the Board advises against the use of formulas that alter the morphology of the language, are uneconomical or lack an equivalent in oral communication: among them, "les niñes", "lxs niñxs", "l@s niñ@s", "los/as niño/as" in Spanish, or “Latinx” in English. Duplication, when deemed necessary, should not be systematic and should be done without using abbreviations: "los niños y niñas" or "las niñas y los niños" and not any of the above or other similar forms. It is recommended that the order of genders be randomly alternated in such cases. Avoid referring to men and women with different degrees of formality or with differentiated formulas of respect (for example, using first names for women and last names for men).

The journal's management will resolve any issues that may arise in line with these good practices, and respecting as much as possible the freedom of its collaborators.

History of Journal

The journal Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo was launched in 1991, as a tool for diffusion and debate at the Group of Studies on the 18th Century of the University of Cadiz (GES.XVIII, group HUM-139 of the Research Plan of Andalusia). Its objective is to value the historical, literary and social legacy of the Enlightenment and Romanticism, through scientific research. Until its 15th issue (2007) it was published on paper with the ISSN 1132-8304; since 2010 it has been published on an annual basis in digital format with the ISSN 2173-0687.
