Abstract
The present article deals with life in Madrid in the 1840s, during the early years
of Isabel II’s reign, as seen by Samuel Edward Widdrington, Martin Haverty and Terence Mahon Hugues. They were three British writers who lived in Madrid for some time, and thus were able to follow closely the complicated politics of the time, and observe the changing customs of the Spaniards. I do not intend to deal here with the History of Spain at that time, only to point out some historical episodes or characters as seen from the perspective of these foreign witnesses.
