The Convention on Cultural Diversity and its current challenges for cultural rights

Abstract

The Convention of Cultural Diversity did not emerge as a cultural rights text. However, in practice, its developments have addressed a number of cultural rights issues, including artistic freedom. These developments are accentuated if put in relation to international instruments specifically focused on cultural rights. This article highlights these developments and interconnections and seeks to provide artists and cultural managers with an overview of how to use the Convention, alone or in connection with other instruments, to claim, promote and exercise their cultural rights.
