Abstract

Amongst many themes that were on display during the sessions of the Courts of Cádiz, one of the more polemic issues was the subsistence of the Inquisition. As opossed to continuity of the Holy Office, advocated by the absolutist party, liberal writers and politicians insisted on the need for its abolition. The constant disputes related to this topic were echoed in the pages of the different periodic publications. The present article tries to give an overall view about the question of the Inquisition through the poetic texts published in the Cadiz’s press between 1811 and 1813, a question that was a recurrent element in the confrontation between the journalists on both sides.
