Abstract

The announcement of the government of Spain of its decision to exhume the mortal remains of the dictator Francisco Franco from the Basilica of the Holy Cross of the Valle de los Caídos in order to put an end to an anomalous situation in a democratic system has meant the reactivation of the debate around the conservation of this monumental complex. Abandonment, demolition and resignification are some of the actions that have been proposed. However, this text advocates for a concise musealization of the funerary monument. With this aim, the role that museums play in overcoming pain at the individual and social levels and their role in shaping and safeguarding the democratic system is argued, and some world-renowned cases are analyzed both from the perspective of the museum and the urban space.
