FACING TWO LOYALTIES: THE CAREER OF THE BASQUE TREASURY MANAGER JOSÉ ALUSTIZA IN THE VENEZUELAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE
Abstract
This article studies the trajectory of the Basque f333inance administrator José Alustiza during the wars of independence in Venezuela. Family ties to merchants enriched by the trade in neutrals, he supported the Supreme Junta of Caracas and, not so favorably, the First Republic. With his fall, he collaborated with the restoration of the monarchy and went into exile after the war to the death. Processed by Morillo, he was exonerated and settled in Puerto Rico.
