Abstract
Adab books contain numerous mentions of women’s labours, as well as anecdotes featuring female characters who carry out one of these jobs. In this article, our first aim is to find out about male attitudes towards women’s wage labour which transmit these books to their educated readers, who are mostly men. We will therefore explore a wide range of works of this literary genre in order to extract from them information about the paid activities carried out by women of the lower classes in the context of the cities of the pre-modern Arab world. On the basis of these literary sources, we will extract from them information about the conditions surrounding women’s labours and if these last were carried out by free and/or slave women. Finally, we will try to determine what is said in these books about whether women could freely dispose of and manage the earnings from their work, in compliance with Islamic law. The results obtained can then be put in dialogue with the knowledge we have on these subjects from other non-literary sources.
