Abstract

 "Money, sex and love mix painfully in Ḥamīda's experience". This study deals with Ḥamīda, the female character in Zugāq al-midaqq, the novel by the Nobel Price for Literature Naŷīb Maḥfūz. It is mainly concerned with the following topics: The influence of the author's professional posts in his works. The author's treatment of al-ḥāra (the neighbourhood) as the main female cha racter of the novel. The importance of this kind of studies for the analysis of the author's works and the problems and evolution of the contemporary Egyptian society. Marriage, machism, and all the female characters connected with the heroine. Description of the personality of Ḥamīda and her pro blems: money, sex and love, intertwined with her three suitors. Conclusion, comparing Ḥamīda with the stereotype of the prostitute in the novels of Maḥfūz and with the social situation of the Egyptian woman of the time.
