Abstract
This article is an approach to the study of the religious crisis undergone by many Arab Christian-Maronite intellectuals during the process of modernization of the 19th century Ottoman Syria, and the conversion to protestantism as the most fitting dogma for their liberal and rationalist ideology as well as for their socio-political aspirations. The study focuses on the conversion of the Shidyaq brothers, Butrus Bustani and Mishaqa.
