Abstract
In this article we study the origin and historical meaning of two poetic compositions that the famous Arcipreste de Hita wrote to be sung by Christian and Moslem students who at nightfall went from house to house begging for their supper. First we explain the reason why giving alms to students and, in particular, providing for their nourishment is considered a religious duty in the Moslem world. We then go on to show how two Islamic habits stemming from this concept were assumed by Christian students in the Middle Ages. One is the so called "paseo mendicante" (ár. nazāha); the other is related to the creation of pious institutions that gave the student or "sopista" a dish of soup.
