Abstract

This study aims to place the life and works of Leo Africanus, or al-Ḥasan b Muḥammad al-Wazzān al-Fāsī, in their contemporary historical context. Depending on their intentions, modern scholars have considered him a Renaissance man, a cross-cultural cosmopolite, or a travelling Arab scholar who educated ignorant Westerners in African geography.
