The reach of Romanticism in Spain
Info
Abstract
For over one hundred years, scholars of Spanish Romantic literature have attempted to comprehend the temporal parameters of their topic as well as the scope of the object of their analyses. What is Romanticism? When and where are its origins to be found? At what moment can this important period in the history of the West be considered completed? These are questions which critics, even in the 21st century, have not resolved; and, when transferred to the Spanish national context, the questions become even more difficult. This article looks at the various critical positions set forth, from the 19th century to today, concerning the temporal limits of Romanticism in Spain; in addition, I will posit my own views on the subject.
