Abstract

Starting from the fundamental postulates of semiotics, we propose the hypothesis that silence involves the same semic act as the linguistic sign. The existence of this non-word in the verbal chain would be due to the twofold function of language: firstly, that of code, which ensures interpersonal communication, based on the arbitrary, but fixed, relationship between signifier and signified; secondly, that of instrument of thought, which allows a reconciliation of word and thought, thanks to the contingent, but mobile, relationship between the linguistic sign and the world. During the verbal exchange, this inherent specificity of language results in the perception of traces of the inexpressible which could intercept the linguistic performance. Thus, silence would be this tense absence within the language activity, promising a new balance between linguistic sign and object.
