Abstract
A photographic album by Thomas Hudson Thatcher, an amateur photographer and traveling salesman, is analyzed, documenting his journey from Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico, to El Paso, Texas, USA, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Through the concept of presence, the images are explored as records of the landscape and everyday life, as well as material remnants that evoke past experiences and sensitivities. Additionally, the cultural practices of amateur photographers are examined within the historical context of the album, its materiality, and the author's career.
