The city of Rabat in the 6th / 12th century: the project of a new capital of the Almohad Empire
Info
Abstract
It is true that the emergence and the history of Rabat (Ribåã al-FatTM) were, along the medieval age, associated with the activity of ñihād. However, a critical examination of medieval historiography allows us to suppose that this Almohad city was created to become the new capital of the Almohad Empire. The article deals with this hypothesis; it tries to explain the real reasons and the different conditions that pushed the first three Almohad caliphs, especially >Abd al-Mu<min, to think of establishing their capital in Rabat.
