A diferencia de lo que ocurrió con Europa, la representación literaría del suicidio no encontró fácil acomodo en la novela norteamericana entre 1775-1850, pues numerosos y complejos factores de toda índole frenaron su respuesta. El propósito de este artículo es explorar, a través de una panorámica cronológica, la percepción del suicidio en Estados Unidos hasta la primera mitad del siglo XIX, incidiendo en algunos de estos condicionantes. Dentro de este contexto tan inhibidor para la plasmación artística del suicidio, también se analizan aquí tres novelas tan distintas en tono e intención como The Power of Sympathy (1789), Wieland (1798) y Moby Dick (1851) en las que excepcionalmente sus protagonistas se suicidan o, si se prefiere, son «asesinados» por la pluma de sus creadores.
