Abstract

The Pantheon of Agrippa, preserved after various vicissitudes, is one of the great examples of the architecture of Rome’s imperial period. It was one of the main monuments visited by travellers, appearing in the first travel experiences and pilgrimages. During the 18th century it acquired a great prominence, generating a series of ideas and perceptions around it inherited in the 19th century and which are conveyed in the literary works of writers who saw the Pantheon in situ. The aim of this research is therefore to study the reception and interpretation of the Pantheon in nineteenth-century fiction based on the authors’ travels, focusing on their readings of texts of the eighteenth century.
