Abstract
Despite the criticism that the concept of sustainable development has suffered, it is increasingly necessary to implement strategies and actions that lead to reducing the degradation of ecosystems caused by human activities.
Knowing the level of sustainability consciousness can allow the creation of specific responses that help to achieve the sustainable development goals.
With the completion of this work, the sustainability consciousness level in rural environments has been evaluated through a validated tool. A formative intervention as a strategy to improve environmental consciousness at different levels, knowledge, attitude and behavior is proposed
Three municipalities in the province of Jaén were chosen to determine the level of consciousness in sustainability with the validated questionnaire. The result of the preliminary evaluation revealed that the behavior in sustainability presented the lowest values for the three dimensions of sustainable development (environmental, social and economic) and, therefore, it was the one on which greater emphasis was placed for its improvement during the formative event. Workshops and training sessions were developed and the improvement in the level of consciousness of sustainability was evaluated by completing the questionnaire once formative sessions were received. The results show a significant improvement in the three municipalities after the participatory formative intervention. Especially the behavioral level experienced a significant improvement, showing that these interventions are effective and necessary in rural environments in the field of sustainability
