A note on the evolution of the iqṭāˁ system in the medieval Morocco
Info
Abstract
This study focuses on the evolution of the iqṭāˁ system during the medieval history of Morocco (al-Maġrib al-aqṣā). Few textual data concerns the long period between the arab-islamic conquest and the rising of Almohad empire, when the absence of a strong central political power do not allowed the developpement of the system. The Almohads, who create a centralized and organized administration, used the fiscal concessions as a mean of retributing their agents. The post- almohad dynasties inherited this system, used by Marinids and Wattāsids to establish their authority upon tribes.
