Abstract
The Maronite monk Pablo Hodar, born in Latakia (Syria), came to Europe in 1755. After spending a few years in Rome and Naples, he settled in Spain to work in the Royal Library in Madrid. Under the supervision of Miguel Casiri, he worked copying Arab manuscripts from the Escorial Library. There, he was involved in two forgeries together with his friend Juan Amon, which was the cause for his banishment. He had to move to Portugal, where he was appointed Lecturer of Oriental Languages at the University of Coimbra, where he died in 1780. An inte resting figure of Iberian Arabism of the 18th century, he was a member of a Maronite group who, both in Spain and Portugal, made a decisive contribution to Arabic and Oriental Studies.
