Abstract
Gaceta de Caracas is considered the first Venezuelan newspaper. It was founded on October 24th 1808 having Andrés Bello as its first writer in charge. The last known issue was held on January 3th 1822. Therefore the printing endured throughout thirteen years and three months. When it first started, it was conceived as an organ of opinion for colonial authorities. In time, depending on the circumstances of the war of Independence, its editorial shifted between patriots and royals administrations. During its lasted direction, the physician José Domingo Díaz was the writer in chief.
