Educating for communication in medicine
Abstract
Appropriate practices in communication between healthcare professional and patient are an essential part of the therapeutic process. The traditional (and outdated) communication that dominated this relationship was based on a paternalistic model, where the professional did not effort to be understood or to understand the patient, and the patients were delivered assured, giving up to the compression of the message and to participate in decisions concerning their lives. Years ago emerged a new model: person-centred communication. This gets to know and understand the patient, and thus it is possible to adapt the therapeutic actions to the needs and personal circumstances of each person, favoring their participation. But to make this a reality, it is necessary to be valued enough this aspect of health care and that health professionals in training access to a comprehensive and progressive preparation during the entire period of university education.
