Brazil: a country in search of a Língua Nacional
Abstract
Firstly, the situation of different native American languages will be examined: the Portuguese Língua Geral in the history of Brazil related to deviation of Brazilian and Portuguese varieties. We consider the roles of Romance and written standard deviation in the maintenance of conservative features or, on the contrary, in the development of innovations. We formulate a hypothesis about the morphosyntactic consequences derived from the appearance of tonic elements in Romance languages in favour of the latin vowel length. Finally, we discuss the difficulties in instrumentalizing the language in the construction of Brazilian identity.
