The concepts of general grammar, logic, Castilian grammar and eloquence in the Course of Castilian Humanities by Gaspar de Jovellanos
Abstract
The object of this article is to present Gaspar de Jovellanos’ linguistic ideas expressed in his Curso de Humanidades Castellanas (1795), the curriculum for his Institute of Mining and Engineering founded in Gijón. At a time when neither General grammar nor Logic was studied in Spain, Gaspar de Jovellanos integrated both fields of knowledge into the curriculum. Key concepts such as Castilian humanities, General grammar, Logic, Rhetoric and Eloquence will be analyzed from a historiographical viewpoint for Spanish Philology.
