Abstract

Songs offer interesting text materials to be studied from a feminist point of view. Although concerned with fictional or imaginary worlds, the ideologies that underlie songs should be analysed from a critical point of view, since they can contribute to the naturalization of inequality, discrimination, harmful relations between men and women, and ultimately gender violence. This article carries out a feminist critical discourse analysis (FCDA) of two famous songs, 'El preso nº9' and 'Toda' (Malú), paying special attention to unveiling those ideologies that support and normalize sexism and gender violence. The analysis carried out shows that these ideologies are enacted in the songs studied through linguistic choices linked to lexical choices and their connotations, semantic contrasts, modality, transitivity, conceptual metaphors etc. The FCDA implemented has revealed how ideologies related to sexism and gender violence are conveyed by the songs under consideration both in overt and subtle ways.
