About the Journal

Focus and scope

The journal Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo was launched in 1991, as a tool for diffusion and debate at the Group of Studies on the 18th Century of the University of Cadiz (GES.XVIII, group HUM-139 of the Research Plan of Andalusia). Its objective is to value the historical, literary and social legacy of the Enlightenment and Romanticism, through scientific research. Until its 15th issue (2007) it was published on paper with the ISSN 1132-8304; since 2010 it has been published on an annual basis in digital format with the ISSN 2173-0687.

All works published in Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo are original and unpublished, and must not have been accepted for publication by any other journal. Articles on literature, art, history and philosophy from the period 1700-1850 in Spain, America and Europe can be found in this journal. To this end, it accepts original works of a general theoretical, critical, historical, erudite or documentary nature in any of the official languages of Spain, as well as in English, French, Italian and Portuguese. Scientific articles are submitted for review through a double-blind peer review system. Once they have successfully completed the evaluation process, they will be published in their original language.

Review process

Authors should submit their papers making sure that they comply with the submission guidelines for authors. Originals received and assigned to a responsible editor will be scrutinised by two peer reviewers experts on the subject matter of the article, who will evaluate the manuscript following the double-blind model. These specialists will upload the corresponding report and their decision on the text to the journal's application. This report may be made in accordance with the template created for this purpose or by completing the data directly in the space provided in the journal application for the review of the work, providing an assessment of the originality of the content of the article and its relevance, the appropriate structure of the manuscript, its clarity and spelling and grammatical correctness, as well as the bibliographical sources used and any other aspect considered of interest for its assessment. It should clearly indicate those aspects that it considers should be improved or the reasons why the submission should be accepted or rejected. *In case of conflict of interest, they must refuse to carry out the evaluation of the paper.

Description of the editorial process from reception to publication of the manuscript

The editorial process followed by Cuadernos de Ilustración y Romanticismo consists of the following:

  • Receipt of the manuscript sent by the author exclusively from the journal's platform.
  • Initial review by a member of the editorial board and assignment of an editor responsible for the evaluation process (2 weeks).
    • Assessment of general compliance with editorial standards, suitability to the journal's subject matter and chronological axis.
    •  Compliance with ethical standards and the anti-plagiarism policy.
  • Assignment of the editor responsible for the editorial process and start of double-blind peer review (2-5 months).
    • Selection of reviewers (responsible editor) and sending of review request (response time 1 week).
    • In case of acceptance of the request by the reviewer, start of the double-blind peer review process (8 weeks).

*This process may eventually take longer when it coincides with the final editing process of the journal issue or with holiday periods; as well as the need to resort to a third reviewer in those cases in which they do not agree.

  • The editor responsible for the peer review process informs the author of the opinion on the base of the peer review reports received (1 month).
    • Comments and decision (acceptance, revision or rejection) are sent.
    • If further revision is required, the author has a deadline of 1 month to send the corrected version.
  • Review of changes and final approval (1-2 months)
    • The editor responsible for the editorial process verifies whether the changes have been incorporated correctly.
    • In the case of major revisions, the reviewers may be asked to assess the changes introduced, and are given a period of 1 month to deliver their final opinion.

    • The orthotypographic revision and layout are carried out.
    • Revision of the layout by the author.
    • Publication in the journal in the second half of the year.

 * Some evaluated and accepted papers may take longer to be published in cases where the evaluation process was initiated when the issue planned for that year was already in the editorial process (preparation of files, layout and proofreading of galley proofs). The journal provides acceptance reports on submissions to those authors who request them in consideration of the delay that sometimes affects the publication of the issue in which their papers are included.

  • Average time of the editorial process in the last 4 issues: 10 months.
