Abstract

En este trabajo proponemos una cierta prevención ante afirmaciones optimistas y, a nuestro juicio, ligeramente precipitadas, sobre el éxito popular de la lectura y los
periódicos a fines del siglos XVIII y primera mitad del XIX. Tras recordar las altas tasas de analfabetismo, recurrimos a analizar las tiradas de algunos periódicos y los costes de impresión, para comparar posteriormente los precios de los ejemplares con una serie de salarios significativos, que nos llevan a concluir que el valor material del papel impreso era un inconveniente más para la lectura.
