Abstract

This paper deals with the lexical item mesa considered through its combination with the
prepositions sobre, en and a in locative expressions. The view presented here is that (i) rather than mere referential labels, words are ways of access to the subjective and social experience of speakers and (ii) the construction of meaning is a holistic process that involves the reciprocal determination of the linguistic units.
The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships among the lexeme mesa, the prepositions and the verbs more frequently used in locative constructions. A qualitative study of 686 utterances sheds light on the interaction between these units. Within the framework of Cognitive Linguistics, our approach is grounded on concepts like the activation of telic qualia, frames, active zones and metonymic connections.

Doctora en Ciencias del Lenguaje (Universidad de Rouen, 2007), Patricia C. Hernández ha sido profesora invitada por las universidades francesas de Orléans y Rouen (2008) donde ha dictado seminarios de Máster en Semántica. Asimismo ha dictado seminarios de posgrado en la Universidad de Buenos Aires (2011) y la Universidad Nacional de La Plata (2012). Ha presentado ponencias en encuentros científicos nacionales e internacionales entre los cuales el IIIe Congrès Mondial de Linguistique Française (Lyon, 2012), III Coloquio Internacional Marcadores del Discurso en las Lenguas Románicas (Campinas, 2013), XIV Coloquio Internacional de Lingüística Ibero-románica (Montpellier, 2013) y IVe Colloque Res per Nomen (Reims, 2013). Entre sus publicaciones se cuenta su tesis doctoral (Francia, 2009), 8 capítulos de libro, 21 artículos en revistas científicas nacionales y extranjeras, y 17 ponencias publicadas en actas de coloquios nacionales e internacionales. Es miembro de equipo de investigación en el Instituto de Lingüística de la UBA., e investigadora extranjera asociada a los laboratorios LLL (Universidad de Orléans) y DySoLa (Universidad de Rouen). Ha realizado numerosas presentaciones y ponencias en encuentros nacionales e internacionales. Patricia C. Hernández tiene el grado de Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques otorgado por la República Francesa en 2005. Sus investigaciones, tanto en francés como en español abordan principalmente la expresión de la espacialidad, la semántica preposicional, la metáfora, la integración conceptual, la nominación y las partículas discursivas.
