Variable placement of subject pronouns in relation to interactional politeness

Abstract
Advances in cognitive linguistics
make it possible to develop a new view of
syntactic variation phenomena in natural
languages, starting from the principle that
any formal choice entails the creation of a
certain meaning. From such a perspective,
grammatical variants can be seen as
resources that help create di erent
communicative styles in interaction. In this
paper we will investigate the possible uses
of variable (preverbal/postverbal)
placement of pronominal subjects as traits
of (im)politeness in colloquial conversation.
Subject preposition, which seemingly
indexes a higher salience of its referent in
speaker perception, is typically associated
to interactional contexts in which a positive
image of said referent is shaped. In turn,
postposition clearly predominates in
pejorative utterances.
