Metaphor, pronominal referentiality and the use of definite descriptions in Eva Perón's political discourse.
Abstract
Política! discourses intend to persuade a publíc or audience of the validity of an ideology. Persuasion strategies include language pragmatic techniques such as the use of metaphors, pronoun deixis and definite descriptions. In this paper, I analyzc how Eva Peron uses the abovemcntioncd pragmatic strategies to create a Peronist metaphor where she has a relevan! place in nine of her politícal discourses. The paper is divided in three parts. First, the relationship betwecn politics and pragmatics is discussed then Eva Peron's story. In the last section, it will be argued that Eva uses discourse strategíes to create a traditional image of herself despite of her political role. In this mctaphor Eva presents herself as Peron=s mate and assislant as well as the mother of al! Argentinians.
