Abstract

The pragmatic theories that firstly tried to define irony hardly reached further than the rhetorical conception, according to which irony is just a trope. This continuity is seldom assumed by modern authors. Actually, Kerbrat-Orecchioni seems to be the only one that considers her work in this way, while other theories present the sametropological pattern but covered under a new terminology. Quite the opposite, the polyphonic perspective byDucrot is an original, purely pragmatical and really alternative account of irony.
