The grammaticalisation of the lexical item ‘see’: From the use of the system to the systematisation of use.
Abstract
We shall analyze sorne processes of grammaticalization in the many uses of the verb 'see' in the current River Plate Spanish system. We shall demonstrate as the lexical ítem 'see' is highly grnmmaticalized, concepts fromdifferent frames of knowledge will be projectively symbolized, procedimental infonnation will be represented, the expression will lose descriptive content, it will beeome syntaetically more opaque and it will refuse morphological change, and finally, meaning assignment will require that language be related to a contextual source, since it will prove more sensitive to externa) conditions. In short, we shall establish how, within the spaee of meaning ofthe verb 'see', a process of decategorization occurs by which the lexical ítem becomes an interaetive marker. Such a process will be explained through pragmatie/cogni tíve principies and linguistic stratcgies that account for the codi fying of the most relevant information for the interpretation.
