Abstract

This paper aíms at gíving a semantic and pragmatíc description of the foll(Jwing concessive structures in oral Spanísh: (a) aunque me ofendió lo voy a perdonar; (b) voy a hacer el doctorado, aunque con el doctorado hay un problema( ... ) y (c) si bien me lo dijo, no le crei. Within the framework provided by Emergent Grammar (Hopper 1998), we analyze a corpus ofverbal interactions included in Habla Culta de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires using quantitative and qualitative methodology. We argue that the structures that are here examined do not alternate freely ín discourse, as sorne grammar studies state. We also prove that each of the structures' occurrence is related to speci fic attributes of discourse coherence and cohesion and that these attributes can reflect different concessive strategies used by speakers.
