Abstract

The goal of this paper is to provide answers to two questions by means of two experiments taken from Noveck 's (2001) work: (i) does the acquisition of pragmatic competence come after semantic competence? Our results indicate that the acquisition of semantic information and pragmatic information are simultaneous. The acquisition of metapragmatic competence, on the other hand, does seem to be acquired later on; this is why it has been (wrongly) argued that pragmatic competence comes later, and (ii) is metapragmatic competence discrete or gradual? Our results show that it is gradual.
