Abstract
We present the 96 borrowings that appear in the work Dictons et traditions, written by Fr Alliaume, Scènes de la vie arabe by Fr. David and Le moutons by Fr. Letheilleux of Spanish, Turkish and French origin. After giving a biographical sketch of the three priests and outlining the Algerian Arabic variety of the Sahara, we offer a list of all the borrowings classified by categories and note the most relevant features in terms of the morphological adaptation they have undergone. While the bulk of Turkish and French borrowings entered during the periods of occupation of Turkey and France respectively, Spanish borrowings arrived with Moors and Jews from the Iberian Peninsula between the 15th and 17th centuries, although it is also likely that they were introduced through the lingua franca.
