Abstract

We intend to question the extended view, among citizens, political leaders and even educators, of transition to Sustainability as a future goal that can be postponed in front of the urgent present necessities. We try to show that, on the contrary, this transition is necessary right now to give solution to so serious interconnected problems as climate change, biodiversity loss, resources depletion or poverty and the massive unemployment that destroys the social cohesion, that are seriously threatening the present generation. In this way we can satisfy today the essential needs for a satisfactory life of all human beings, without exceeding the planetary boundaries and damaging the future generations. Education must show that the transition to Sustainability becomes the way to harmonize fundamental Human Rights such as the right to work and the right to a healthy environment, rights that not only don’t oppose each other but need to be reached together.
