Inference and attenuation in information theory

Abstract
Diachronic review of information theory, especially focused on the concepts “theme” and “rheme” and their influence on mechanisms of attenuation. This study reveals the evolution of the units of information in a sentence so as to offer a theoretical framework which can be used to analyse the cognitive structures which are demanded by attenuation. Attenuation is also conceived as "a process of neutralization of the focus", which will let us differentiate two different types of attenuation whether the attenuated message is either known or new. Thanks to the interaction of the syntactic and the psychological perspectives, two clear stages can be recognised from the moment that the potential damage of a message is identified to the moment this message is eventually attenuated. Finally, studies of the functions and senses of mitigation are used to present an assortment of examples to illustrate the most frequent mechanisms of attenuation in directive, assertive, comissive and expressive acts.
