Abstract

This paper deals with the most frequent ways to quote somebody else's words in joumals, newspapers, etc. From the analysed examples the reported speech is witnessed as a continuum, smoothly flowing from one speech to another. The main goal is not establish clearcut divisions in order to create different and distinct typologies, but to postulate some undoubtful criteria (which must be related to the speech act) which allow understanding of the reported and/or direct speech, both these ways being the cornerstone of the continuum.
