Towards a semantic-pragmatic characterisation of the interjection.

Abstract
This paper describes the semantic and pragmatic behavior of interjection.'> and proposes sorne future paths ofresearch, namely on the field of Relevance Theory (RT). Thc starting point of the paper is a semantic approach to the meaning of interjections as a prior step totheir study from a pragmatic point of view. A review is offered of their peculiarities as linguístic signs as well as an analysis oftheír more prominent content features (non-predicativeness, lack ofinternal articulation and indeterminacy). As a result, "modality" is proposed as the contcnt coded by this linguistic category. The second part of the paper analyzes the pragmatic behavíor of interjections under the theoretical assumptions of RT, showing their role as contextualízers am:I, more specifically, as restrictors of high leve! explicatures, a role which is only absent in sorne so-called proper interjectíons. At the end of the paper, a conception of these units as discourse markers is critically revíewed,
