Applying linguistics to the teaching of pronunciation: Characterisation of a foreign accent and pedagogical implications

Abstract
This article is a critical review of Alberto Carcedo (1998). This contribution of applied linguistics to second language teaching, from the perspective of contrastive analysis, is the first one between Spanish and Finnish, and incorporates also theoretical and methodological aspects of error anaylisis and of the interlanguage model, in order to account for the phonetic features that characterize a foreign accent: that of the Finn (Finnish speakers) when speaking Spanish. We will thoroughly discuss the theoretical postulates guiding the book, as well as the collection of samples of research techniques, so as to be able to assess the pedagogical implications of this contribution, and properly locate it within the present panorama of second language teaching, and, mor: specifically, in that of E/LE (Spanish as a Second Language).
