Abstract

This article explores the educational possibilities of current horror films, a genre usually reviled in educational contexts. Fear, inherent to humanity, evokes the most basic of our instincts: survival. Taking advantage of its cognitive and emotional impact, in the context of a new approach to the genre that delves into real problems and dilemmas, could favor the development of critical thinking and critical social awareness in students, an increase in empathy and emotional management, also promoting their motivation. With the help of an analysis sheet, 15 horror films from the last decade (2013-2022) have been selected and descriptively analyzed, whose plots have been identified as facilitating relevant social, philosophical and political reflections. Specifically, this study proposes to work with the films analysed: exclusion and racism; capitalist life and consumerism; mental illness, dependency and death; as well as harassment and the dangers of ICT. It is considered that these films can become an important driver of social change, but without forgetting the need to meet the recommended ages and the correct educational support to avoid unwanted effects.
