Pragmatic constraints on co-reference : some considerations on metonymy
Abstract
This paper sets out to set the grounds for the analysis of predicate transfer in metonymic utterances within the relevance-theoretic framework. We suggest that the apparent lack of coreference in certain cases is due to a series of pragmatic restrictions controlled by the principie of relevance.
